1. Slow down!

It’s more efficient if you eat in about half an hour what you would otherwise take 10 minutes to get off your plate. Just by eating more slowly at each meal you can lose 1kg a month. A good way to do this is to put your fork down on your plate after every bite. Block out distractions so you can focus on your food. (Put the phone away!)

2. Use a smaller plate!

As the portion sizes served increased, so did the plate sizes. When you see a smaller portion of food smiling back at you on a giant plate, you may feel like you’re not eating enough. Put your main meal on a plate about 15cm wide, the equivalent of a salad plate. Choose a cup-sized dessert or cereal plate instead of a soup plate. When eating out ask for an extra salad plate and transfer the appropriate amount of food to it. Feel free to ask the waiter to pack the rest to go.

3. Eat breakfast

Research shows that people who eat breakfast regularly are thinner. Dieters who eat breakfast lose weight more successfully and keep it off more easily. Pack your breakfast with protein and fibre, both of which help you feel full all morning.
